ANNOUNCEMENT

4/29/20 SCHOOL CLOSURE UPDATE

On the afternoon of April 23, 2020, Governor Mark Gordon made the announcement that he would not be extending the statewide school closure that is set to expire on April 30, 2020. He also stated that the decision to extend the closures beyond that date would be the responsibility of individual school districts under the advisement of the County and State Public Health Officers.

Sublette County School District Number Nine (SCSD #9) has been providing a K thru 12 home based Adapted Learning Plan (ALP) since April 6, 2020. On April 28, 2020 the School Board held a Special Session to determine if they would continue with the existing ALP thru June 4, 2020 or if they would make amendments to the ALP. Relying upon the information we have and in support of the Superintendent’s recommendation, they voted to continue with the existing ALP for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. In effect, we have no plan for a return of students to school this school year.

We are reviewing our options for the summer including the provision of a credit recovery program, continuing access for students to school based learning software, and summer school/transition programs. We are also trying to determine our ability to provide breakfast/lunch thru the month of June beyond 6/4/2020.

A key component of any plan for the school district to re-open, even partially, would then be the development of a re-entry plan that is approved by the County and State Public Health Officers. Most importantly we want a re-entry plan/protocol that is designed to give everyone confidence in our ability to keep everyone healthy and safe.

For now, we are remaining closed. We need the continued support of parents and guardians working with students and emphasizing the need for their children to remain engaged in their educational activities thru June 4, 2020. The staff will plan to finish the school year following our ALP and current delivery model. The school district’s administrative personnel will continue to consider options for summer programs while making plans for the start of the 2020-21 school year.

Our main priority now, and as we plan for the future, will be the health and safety of everyone. We will not be making any plans that jeopardize or risk anyone’s health or safety. As more information becomes available we will make every effort to provide you with that information.

We remain hopeful for the future and encourage everyone to do the same!

Sincerely,

Kevin P Garvey

Superintendent

4/1/20 MORE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ANY UPDATES ON WHEN I, OR MY CHILD, MAY GET ITEMS FROM THEIR SCHOOL LOCKER? CLASSROOM? GYM LOCKER?

YES, If you call the school office beginning on Monday 4/6/20 we will be able to schedule locating the items in the school locker or classroom. We will schedule a time when you may come by the school and pick them up in front. Only staff members will be allowed in the buildings, there are no exceptions. Scheduling your pick up is important.

If you need items from a gym locker you may begin calling the school office on Tuesday 4/14/20 to schedule a pick up of those items.

In either case if there is a need for expediting your request let us know and we will be as responsive as we can.

IS THERE ANYTHING THAT IS BEING DONE TO IMPROVE CONNECTIVITY?

YES, We have ordered wifi towers for BPHS, BPE and LBE. They have a limited range but should be accessible from the parking lots of those buildings. We are looking into the possibility of making a bus wifi accessible and parking it in Marbleton. There is an ongoing gap right now between placing orders and having those items arrive.

IS THERE A SCHOOL SCHEDULE FOR ONLINE LEARNING?

YES, we have just received approval from the Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) of our Alternative Learning Plan (ALP). The plan included a class schedule and is accessible via our website or on our facebook page. We will begin following our school calendar on Monday 4/6/20. In almost every instance instruction is scheduled to take place in the morning with support in the afternoon. Please keep in mind that for many/most classes your child/children can access the instruction at times that might best suit their, or your families, needs. We always consider establishing a routine to be important but many factors may come into play in your home/situation.

IS THERE ANY CHANGE TO THE STATUS OF SPRING SPORTS OR GRADUATION?

NO, they have not been canceled. It seems that discussions continue to take place regarding both issues. The decisions made by the Governor and the State Public Health Officer will take precedence.

WILL THERE BE A SPRING ATHLETIC/ACTIVITY SEASON?

The entire season has not been canceled yet. This decision will be made by the Wyoming High School Activity Association (WHSAA). - 4/7/20 WHSAA has just notified us that all spring athletics have been canceled for the remainder of the school year.

WILL THE STUDENTS BE RETURNING TO SCHOOL ANY TIME DURING THIS LAST QUARTER OF THE YEAR?

Some time prior to 4/3/20 the Governor will be declaring the next step for the remainder of the school year. He MAY pick a date in the not too far future and reconsider the option of students returning just prior to that date. You may want to anticipate that students will not be returning any time prior to a decision from the Governor and Public Health Officials. You should anticipate that school will resume in an “Alternative Education Format” (AEF) on 4/6/20. The “Learning Plan” that will determine the AEF should include online learning (e-learning), interactive electronic learning with the teaching staff, and packets. The Learning Plan needs to be submitted to the Wyoming Department of Education by 5 pm on Tuesday 3/31/20. Upon receipt of approval from the Wyoming Department of Education (WDE), we will make that plan available on this website.

WHAT IF I HAVE INCONSISTENT OR POOR CONNECTIVITY?

We are concerned about students with limited connectivity and will be trying to determine who they are. You should be contacted prior to 4/3. For these students we will begin with packets and determine if there is anything else we can do to improve their connectivity and access to their instructors.

WHAT CAN I DO IF WE ARE HAVING DIFFICULTY CONNECTING WITH A SCHOOL BASED PROGRAM (e.g. IXL) ON MY DEVICE?

Do a ‘hard shut down’. If that does not work, contact the school office using your phone or other device if you have one. You will be contacted as soon as possible.

MY CHILD/CHILDREN RECEIVE A SPECIFIC SUPPORT SERVICE FROM THE SCHOOL. WILL THAT SERVICE CONTINUE WHILE EDUCATION IS OCCURRING UNDER THE AEF?

In almost every instance the answer is YES. The service provider will be contacting you soon to set up a schedule for your child/children. We are reluctant, for everyone’s sake, to send anyone to an individual’s home and that may present us with some challenges. If you have not been contacted about the specific support prior to, or during, the week of 4/6/20, please contact your school office.

IS EVERY STUDENT ELIGIBLE FOR THE FOOD PROGRAM WHILE SCHOOL IS CLOSED?

Every enrolled student IS ELIGIBLE for the food program. All you MUST do is sign up for the program (website or call school office). There will be a breakfast and lunch sack available for every school day during this closure (currently ends 4/3). If school resumes on 4/6/20, we will do all we can to continue the food program. Pick-up will take place in the morning in the parking lot of Big Piney Elementary (8:00-8:30) and Labarge Elementary (8:30-9:00). If you cannot access the pick-up during the scheduled times we will deliver the sacks to your home.

WHEN WILL STUDENTS OR ADULTS BE ABLE TO GET INTO SCHOOL TO PICK UP ITEMS?

More than ever we are dependent upon our staff remaining healthy in order to deliver an educational program for students. There are no substitute/guest teachers. Therefore, it is likely that only staff members will be admitted to the buildings as we move forward. If a student, or a student’s family member, needs something from school we would ask that you call the office. We will then schedule a time to have that available for you in the front of the school. The availability of personnel will be limited until 4/6/20.

WILL THERE BE ANY MEETINGS HELD TO LET US KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON (e.g. Graduation?)

If a meeting needs to be held under our current status, it will not be held in a physical space. We are working with, and reviewing, alternative means of holding meetings (e.g. Board Meetings). We will set up the meeting and all you will need to do is call in or log on. Zoom and live streaming are possibilities but we are considering others. Right now, Graduation is not cancelled. Things are moving swiftly so we will try to keep you informed.

WILL THERE BE ANY STATEWIDE ASSESSMENT THIS YEAR?

WYTOPP & WY-ALT are both canceled. The April 21 online administration of the ACT has also been canceled. ACT is looking to set a new date and they are considering an online only format.

The AP Exam will be administered online and from home. Information regarding this instance is available on the following website referred to in WDE Memo 2020-043:
